Costa confident over fitness

first_img Costa has scored eight goals in six Premier League games this season and played for the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 1-0 win at Sporting Lisbon in Champions League Group G on Tuesday night. That was despite Mourinho suggesting the £32million summer signing from Atletico Madrid is doing virtually nothing in training for fear of exacerbating his hamstring problems. “If I played 90 minutes it’s clear that I’m okay,” Costa said in Spanish paper Marca. “I am feeling better all the time, and it is the boss’ (Vicente del Bosque’s) decision. “During the week I have been working intensively with the physios because I have had some discomfort for a while.” Mourinho suggested Costa should be omitted from Spain’s squad for the matches with Slovakia and Luxembourg this month, but insisted he would not contact Del Bosque to make the plea. Costa does not expect Mourinho and Del Bosque to fall out over the issue. “I do not think it’s a thing that can happen,” Costa added. (March 8, 2017)–A trio of recent graded stakes winners, Gormley, Mastery and Iliad all figure prominently among a field of seven sophomores in Saturday’s Grade II, $400,000 San Felipe Stakes at a mile and a sixteenth.  A key steppingstone to the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 8, the San Felipe, which will be contested for the 80th time, has produced five winners that have gone on to victory in the Kentucky Derby:  California Chrome in 2014, Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000, Sunday Silence in 1989, Affirmed in 1978 and Determine in 1954.Long regarded as one of America’s most important Derby preps, the San Felipe holds a total of 85 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, to be distributed on a 50-20-10-5 basis to the first, second, third and fourth place finishers. ILIAD:  A bay ridgling by Ghostzapper, he comes off a 3 ½ length win going seven furlongs in the Grade II San Vicente Stakes on Feb. 12, which was his first start for trainer Doug O’Neill.  Owned by Kaleem Shah, he made his first two starts with Bob Baffert, breaking his maiden going six furlongs on Dec. 18 at Los Alamitos.  Although both Gormley and Mastery have an abundance of early lick, Iliad could be on the early San Felipe lead, as he’s trying two turns for the first time in what will be his fourth career start.  He be ridden by Flavien Prat, who was aboard for the San Vicente win.center_img MASTERY:  Unbeaten in three starts for Bob Baffert, this Kentucky-bred colt by Candy Ride has been idle since taking the Grade I, 1 1/16 miles Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 10. Like Gormley, Mastery, who tried two turns for the first time on Dec. 10, likes to run on the lead.  Odds-on in all three starts, Mastery, who is owned by Cheyenne Stables, LLC, will be ridden for the third time in a row by Mike Smith, who took last year’s San Felipe with Danzing Candy. GORMLEY:  A three length winner of the Grade I, 1 1/16 miles Frontrunner Stakes in only his second start here on Oct. 1, he was subsequently well beaten in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 5, but bounced back with a gutty head victory in the Grade III, one mile Sham Stakes over a sloppy track on Jan. 7.  A Kentucky-bred colt by Malibu Moon, Gormley has won three out of his four starts and has been on or just off the lead in all three wins, including a first-out maiden score at 6 ½ furlongs on Sept. 4.  Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, trained by John Shirreffs and ridden by Victor Espinoza, Gormley will vie for top billing in the tote with Mastery. Be sure to tune into XBTV on Saturday at www.xbtv.com/watch-live/ from any mobil device or computer.  The XBTV team will feature live, on-site coverage all day long on Santa Anita Handicap Day, and Gulfstream Park bonus coverage will be provided as well.                Fans can watch videos of San Felipe workers at www.xbtv.com/video-on-demand/workouts/ .First post time on Saturday will be early, at 12 noon.  Admission gates open at 10 a.m.  For scratches, changes and complete morning line information, please visit: www.santaanita.com/horse-racing/live-racing/.last_img read more

Urban housing success story

first_imgKhanyi MagubaneThe Department of Housing has applauded the completion of the urban housing project funded by the European Union’s (EU) R200 million investment. The money was donated in the form of a grant, enabling South Africa to develop an affordable urban housing programme. The urban social housing project came about as a means of addressing the need for more affordable accommodation in cities, said Department of Housing spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya. “The money was used to set up housing associations, such the Johannesburg Housing Company and the Madula Mogo (“we all live together”) company. These are section 21 [not-for-profit] companies, who used the money to buy and renovate inner city buildings.” The units in those buildings are then rented out to low-income earners.Besides the buying and renovating of buildings, part of the money was used to develop social amenities, such as play areas and crèche facilities for children, homework centres for school learners, and relaxation/games areas for adult residents. The money was also put towards economic amenities, including computer centres, where residents can access the internet. Also included in the economic amenities are the small businesses run within the complex.Mabaya said the nationally run programme, which took seven years to complete, was put into place as part of the Department of Housing’s vision of eradicating informal settlements around South Africa. He said the growth of the informal settlements in urban areas was caused, in part, by low-income earners’ inability to afford accommodation inside the city. “Most people go and stay in informal settlements because that is the only area they can afford. This project was carried out in Durban, Cape Town, and Gauteng in the urban cities, to address the high need for social housing.”Speaking at the official completion of the project, Itumeleng Kotsoane, Housing Department Director General, said stakeholders could now stand back and reflect on the many successes that they have jointly achieved. He noted that “without the European Union’s involvement…we would not have made this dream possible for the citizens of this country”.Use of the fundsThe project was established in 2000, and in the past seven years the funding was spent as follows:R26.68-million to social housing institutions in the form of capacity grants, which enabled the section 21 companies to purchase and refurbish inner city buildings.R25.5-million on capacity building and training in the sector, including training in property management, on being landlords and in business management.R23.1-million to social housing institutions as bridging finance through the National Housing Finance Corporation and the Trust for Urban Housing Finance,R4.8-million towards management staff costs, andR3.6-million into focused technical support to social housing institutions.Lodewijk Briet, EU ambassador to South Africa, also voiced his contentment at the completion of the project. “There is no doubt that we value these essential services as we formally conclude a successful participation of this programme, as housing is one of important areas of delivery in South Africa,” he said. The New European House in Hillbrow, in Johannesburg city centre, was officially opened at the completion of the project. The building consists of 68 units and a 100-bed shelter to accommodate people in emergency situations.Mabaya also said that in a bid to further cement the EU’s commitment to South Africa, Briet also announced that the EU has now made €960 million available to enable the South African government to implement social programmes. “The European Union is not coming to us with its own programme and agenda; it’s coming to us saying that ‘you have programmes, we want to help you implement them’. The Department of Housing will apply for some of that money, to continue our programmes.”Useful linksNational Association of Social Housing OrganisationsTrust for Urban Housing FinanceThe Johannesburg Housing Companylast_img read more
