DA: Man Indicted for Murder in NYPD Officer Brian Moore Slaying

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York Queens District Attorney Richard Brown Thursday said a grand jury returned a 12-count indictment charging a 35-year-old Queens Village man with murder in the fatal shooting of an NYPD officer from Massapequa. Demetrius Blackwell was charged with varying degrees of murder and attempted murder, along with weapons and drug charges, according to the indictment. Blackwell, an ex-con, was expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon before Queens Supreme Court justice Joseph Zayas. He faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole on the top charge of aggravated murder, if convicted. The death of officer Brian Moore, 25, touched off days of intense mourning that culminated in a sorrow-filled funeral in Seaford that attracted thousands of law enforcement officers from across the country. To this day, blue ribbons remain tied to trees and porches in honor of the beloved officer. In a statement Thursday, Brown said Blackwell on May 2 allegedly fired at Moore and his partner, Officer Erik Jensen, “without warning.” “The defendant’s alleged actions are a direct attack on society and the law and reminds us of the dangers that our police officers face each day,” Brown added. DA Brown: #POBrianMoore was a young police officer with a bright & promising future whose life was senselessly cut short far too soon.— Richard A. Brown (@QueensDABrown) June 11, 2015Moore and Jensen, members of the 105th Precinct’s Anti-Crime Unit, were patrolling Queens Village when they spotted Blackwell adjusting his waistband. Intending to question Blackwell, the pair approached him near 104th Road at roughly 6:15 p.m., but were unexpectedly met by gunfire, the Queens DA’s office said. Multiple shots were fired into the unmarked patrol vehicle, Brown said, with one striking Moore in the head. Jensen escaped the shooting without being struck. Moore died two days later. Blackwell has also been charged with the attempted murder of Officer Jensen. The Queens grand jury also indicted Blackwell on criminal possession of stolen property for allegedly stealing a tee shirt and pair of sneakers in an effort to disguise himself, Brown said. Blackwell was also indicted on drug charges for allegedly carrying small amounts of cocaine and marijuana at the time of his arrest.Read the indictment:last_img read more

Club Travel honours Mandela at Sisters Incorporated

first_imgClub Travel staff were given the chance to bid on the handmade blankets and the money raised enabled Club Cares, to buy 67 winter blanketsClub Travel staff rallied behind Mandela Day and the “67 Blankets for Madiba” campaign by using nearly 50km of wool to craft blankets, which were auctioned and the money used to buy 67 winter warming blankets for abused women and their children at the Sisters Incorporated shelter in Kenilworth, Cape Town. The handmade blankets were created by staff members, their family and friends with knitting needles; crochet hooks and wool, provided by Club Cares, their CSI division, to knit 30cm x 30cm squares. Nearly 5km of wool was used to create each blanket, which took about five days to stitch together into handmade patchwork blankets.Club Travel staff were given the chance to bid on the handmade blankets and the money raised enabled Club Cares, to buy 67 winter blankets. Staffers then handed out the blankets at Sisters Incorporated, which was founded in 1959 and offers a safe haven to single mothers-to-be who are considering placing their baby up for adoption, and to women who are victims of rape or domestic violence.“I certainly thought we were being overzealous when purchasing 60 balls of wool, 20 sets of knitting needles and 15 crochet hooks but found that we had to ‘top-up’ within days due to our team’s enthusiasm. Before we knew it, we had knitted and crochet squares coming in from Club Travel team members, their families, friends and our partners too, which resulted in a few team members working around the clock to make these squares into blankets,” said Luana Visagie – Club Cares Committee.“This was a true team effort with even those who had not knitted since school, getting back into the craft and now wanting to continue knitting. Club Cares was launched in 2002 and I believe it’s continued success is largely due to the passion our staff share when it comes to giving back to communities in need. Staff personally donate a set amount of money to Club Cares on a monthly basis and Club Travel then matches the contribution made by staff – this, along with the physical involvement by staff, has resulted in many wishes being fulfilled.”Sisters Incorporated provides full board and lodging, three meals a day, clothing, toiletries and bedding. They empower the women in their care through skills training and support by operating a full-time crèche for their children. They also help the women to find employment and access legal assistance as well as medical care.“A heartfelt thank you to Club Travel for blessing us on this Mandela Day. You have helped us to assist the many woman and children and victims of domestic violence, who live at our shelter. From our staff, thank you for holding our arms up!” said Linda Fugard, Manager at Sisters Incorporated.last_img read more

12 Successful Ways to Save Money

first_img https://pixabay.com/photos/money-savings-piggy-white-1885540/ Return to article. Long DescriptionPay Yourself First- Treat savings like an important household bill (e.g., loan payment). Set aside a part of each paycheck, even if it is only a small amount, and leave it there. Save automatically where possible.Collect Coins– Put loose change into a can or jar. When the container is full, deposit the money into a savings account. Set aside $1 a day, plus loose change, and you should have about $50 a month, or $600 a year, saved. Save $2 a day, plus loose change, and you should have about $1,000.Complete a Savings Challenge– Pick a savings Challenge that matches your time frame and savings goal such as the 30 Day $100 Savings Challenge or the 50 Week $2,500 Savings Challenge. Savings challenges gradually ramp up savings deposits over time and provide motivation and structure.Continue to Pay a Loan or Bill– Make payments to savings or investment accounts with money that is freed up when loan payments end or an expense, such as childcare, ends. The rationale behind this savings method is that you are already accustomed to the payment so “redirecting” it will not pinch your cash flow.Break Costly Habits– Track your spending for a month or two and pick a few places where spending can be cut back or cut out to “find” money to save. For example, brown-bagging lunch two or three days per week could save hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.Bank a Windfall– Save all or part of large, infrequent expected or unexpected sums of money. Examples of common financial windfalls include tax refunds, inheritances, settlements, awards and prizes, retroactive pay increases, and year-end bonuses at work.Crash Save- Decide that, for a month or two, you’ll buy only absolute necessities and save any money that remains after paying bills. At the end of the crash savings time period, treat yourself and buy the item(s) that you were saving for. Then resume your “normal” spending habits or set a new crash savings goal.Start a “Club” Savings Plan- Start a structured savings plan to save money over the course of a year for holiday or vacation expenses. Some banks and many credit unions still offer them. Unlike “coupon books” of years ago, weekly savings deposits are often transferred electronically from a checking to savings.Save Your “Extra” Paychecks– Mark your paydays each year on a calendar. If you are paid bi-weekly, in two months of the year, you will receive three paychecks. If you are paid weekly, there will be four months with five paychecks. Anticipate these months in advance and plan to save part of the “extra” paycheck.Save Excess Expense Reimbursement Money– Review your employer’s reimbursement policy. If you get a fixed sum for business travel expenses, instead of having to collect receipts, and spend less than the per diem amount, save the difference. Ditto for mileage reimbursement for using a personal car for business.Reinvest Interest and Dividends Automatically-Arrange to have dividends and capital gains on mutual funds reinvested to purchase additional shares rather than receiving a check for a small amount and spending it. This is a painless way to increase investment account value over time.Participate in a Tax-Deferred Retirement Plan– Reduce your salary via payroll deduction to save for retirement and aim to take maximum advantage of employer matching. Money contributed to a 401(k), 403(b), or similar retirement savings plan and earnings on these funds grow tax-deferred until withdrawal. By Barbara O’Neill, Ph.D., CFP®, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, [email protected] dieting, saving money is hard to start, even harder to maintain, and requires patience and discipline. When you achieve your financial goals, however, the results are so worth it. Below are 12 time-tested ways to save:last_img read more
